Jacob Trette in Serious Condition After Surfing Mavericks

Saturday morning at the famous Mavericks surf break, Jacob Trette suffered serious injuries after getting hit by 20-25ft swells that caught many of the surfers off guard. Most of the surfers were not expecting this set to roll in and when it did many were left scrambling to try to make it over the break of these huge waves. Jacob Trette was one of the few unlucky ones to not get over the wave in time and suffered getting hit by two two-wave hold downs before being washed into the rocks on the inside of the break.

Luckily there was Russel Ord who decided not to follow the new law passed by NOAA which banned PWCs (personal watercraft ) from this area, and was able to come to the aid of both Alex Bottello and Trette. While rescuing Bottello they found Trette floating face up in the water and Ord quickly grabbed and put him onto the sled. Bottello then held Trette while Ord brought him to shore. With the aid of fellow surfers and firefighters that arrived they were able to revive Tretter and get him sent to the hospital where he is in critical condition.

Many surfers had protested the ban on PWC for reasons such as this when big events are held and the use of these PWCs can be life saving. Luckily Ord didn’t follow this law and helped save Trette instead of the situation becoming much worse had he not been out there to help. Both Ord and Bottello are prime examples of the family community the surfing world holds. Best wishes go out to Trette and his family. Hopes for a full and speedy recovery.

How to Help the Henry Family

On 11/24/2010 the Henry family loss their house to a fire that destroyed all of their belongings.  Doug, Stacey, Brianna, and Ian Henry could use help from friends and fans during this time.  There will be different ways for people to help and will let you know on this posting as they come up.  Please feel free to post questions in the comments area below.

  • Donations – People can make donations through this link at the Road 2 Recovery.  They were kind enough to send us this link that will get 100% of the donations to the Henry Family.  Follow this link to make a donation.  https://r2r.webconnex.com/gen?comments=for:+Doug+Henry         Please make sure you leave the comment box as is so they know who the donation is for.
  • Race Memorabilia - we will also be looking for people that would have anything from jerseys, pants, posters, rare items, or any other race memorabilia that would be meaningful to Doug that people would like to give back to Doug.  Since most of his trophies and other history from his racing career was lost we would like to help rebuild part of his career for him.  Please email talk@healclothing.com with info on what you have and will set up a place to send these items.
  • Gift card other contributions – Right now the Henry’s have enough clothes for the moment from what has already been given by people.  They will be needing help with other items that if you would like donate gift cards or have some other items for the family you can send them to PO Box 822 – Monroe, CT 06468  If you have a large item and need a residential address to ship to please email talk@healclothing.com for info on that.
  • HEAL Clothing Donation CodeHEAL is going to give a donation code out that when used with purchase will donate $10 from every item purchased to the Henry Family (1 item $10, 2 items $20, 3 items $30, ect..).  The coupon code to use will be HENRYS and should be up by end of day Friday.  So no matter what item is purchased we will make sure a $10 donation goes to help the Henry family from it.  (you will see 1% come off your total to make the code valid to show you want to support the Henry family)
  • BMX Race at Foothills BMX -  On Sunday the 5th of December a few guys have gotten together to put on a benefit race for the Henry family.  It is open to the public and you do not have to be a member of the track to race.  Good practice for anyone heading out to Ohio for the races.  There will be a $10 donation and silent auction going on.  There are more details on the facebook event page here.  Rain or shine and should be a good day of fun racing for a good cause.  Being held in the home town of the Henrys of Torrington, CT.

Athlete Recovery Fund’s Wrap up from Chicago’s Dew Tour

Here’s an update from the Athlete Recovery Fund from the Chicago Dew Tour stop. ARF is a major player at the Dew Cup events and is able to have the foundation benefit from this tour with auctions and bringing awareness to what they do. HEAL supports ARF with shirts that provide donations to this foundation. So check out their recap that was taken from their website, check out some shirts that will help support ARF, and go check out their website to see more of what they do.

Wrap up from Chicago’s Dew Tour: (this info in cr. to ARF)

Athlete Recovery Fund kicked off the Dew Tour season with a lot of involvement at the first stop. We started out Thursday night with an athlete meeting which the Hyatt Regency Hotel donated a banquet room and negotiated a special menu for. The official insurance reps of ARF, Jeff Suarez and Amanda Savage also split the costs of providing the food to all who showed up! All together 53 BMX’ers showed up to get the details about what ARF accomplished last year and to ask any questions that came to mind.

There still is some confusion regarding how to apply for assistance so just to put it out there if you are a professional BMX, Skate or FMX rider in need of financial help after an injury please click on the Apply button from our home page at www.athleterecoveryfund.com . Complete the information and usually you will get a response in 24 – 48 hours. If you know of anyone that may benefit from our help email info@athleterecoveryfund.com or just complete the application.

Most importantly ARF is not a replacement for health insurance. We all need to have at least the most basic medical insurance coverage. ARF is here to help with the costs that insurance doesn’t cover like deductibles, surgery, rehabilitation specialists, home health care equipment and more. If you have questions about insurance email info@athleterecoveryfund.com and we will put you in touch with the best people in the business. Policies are surprisingly cheaper than most expect.

Friday kicked off the opening of the venue to the public and Paul Mitchell brought out volunteer students and stylists from Paul Mitchell’s local school and distributor. They all gave up their weekends to sit in the heat and provide hundreds of haircuts and sample products for anyone that donated at least $15 to ARF! Their amazing efforts raised awareness and money for ARF so a huge thanks to all the students and stylists!

Ogio had been scheduled to have a dunk tank running all weekend, but a soggy field and a leaky water truck prevented us from pulling it off. Keep an eye out for the dunk tank at upcoming stops on the tour!

Friday night was the Alli After Dark party where ARF had some awesome auction items provided by supporters who provided product.

  • Fit PRK3 Complete bike!
  • Oakley men’s and women’s glasses and googles!
  • Nike 6.0 Lightning Bolts artwork!
  • Transworld Media Ride BMX subscriptions, videos t-shirts and sweatshirts!
  • Rockstar helmet signed by all the BMX team riders sweatshirts, trucker hats and t-shirts!
  • Allan Cooke autographed his cover shot of Ride magazine and a helmet!
  • Complete front and rear complete Big Ballers and two custom Stephen Murray Big Baller rims!
  • A pretty amazing opportunity where all the BMX Dirt finalists autographed their shirts straight off their back after the comp to support the auction!
  • Jamie Bestwick even provided one of his very own custom painted bikes from the ’08 season!

The auction was a huge success thanks mostly to Chuck Hemmingway and the crew from Ball Park cleaning us out! Just a little teaser ARF and Ball Park are working on an upcoming project that will be debuted at the Portland stop of the Dew Tour, Wendy’s Invitational. You won’t miss it!

We can’t forget the athletes who also opted in to donate 5% of their purse money in support of ARF. Although the consent forms didn’t make it in all of the athlete’s registration packets I had many BMX’ers chasing me down asking to sign one. Props to all who supported ARF, you get it!

Altogether we had a slam packed weekend during the first visit for ARF and Dew Tour in Chicago! Looking forward to the rest of the season and all we can accomplish this year. Fundraising is tough business in these financial times but ARF is here for the long haul and as you can see we are coming up with more ways to get companies to participate and donate all the time. See you on the road this summer!

Mission Statement: To provide Professional Athletes in BMX, FMX and Skate Boarding with financial support after a severe injury and granting funds for rehabilitation, equipment, long term disability and educational scholarships.

Wakeboarding Weekend

Since the weather finally let up here in New England (we aren’t sunny california and have to deal with crappy weather all the time!) decided to go out wakeboarding with my brothers.  The lake was cold since it has been raining basically since May but the sun came out for a bit here and there and turned out to be an OK day.

This weekend in CT there is a wakeboard rail jam competition going down at Brownstone Park.  July 4th and 5th they will be hosting their contest as well as some pro lessons being held on the 5th for free.  To learn more about the wakeboarding contest click here.  Here are some pictures from my brothers and I out on the lake
